About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Develop and produce remotely operated process equipment and systems for hot-cell and glove-box applications
  • Support operation and maintenance of remotely operated equipment, systems, and technical baselines
  • Develop practical engineering solutions for research-related issues requiring specialized, one-of-a-kind equipment
  • Design and develop processes, handling equipment, systems, and fixturing for remote applications
  • Modify existing equipment and adapt commercial equipment for remote applications
  • Install and qualify new Post Irradiation Examination (PIE) and test equipment and instrumentation
  • Serve as technical interface between nuclear facilities, principal investigators, projects, and programs
  • Support nuclear fuel and material research through process development, operation, and data analysis
  • Establish experiment-specific requirements for remote processes and examinations
  • Complete design reviews and verification
  • Manage configuration of assigned systems and the Engineering Change process
  • Support procurement, quality-level determination, scheduling, and cost estimating for small projects
  • Collaborate with researchers, technicians, operators, and scientists across the equipment lifecycle

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, or a directly related engineering field from an ABET-accredited institution or other related field
  • For Level 2: 2 years of experience with a bachelor's degree, or master's degree and 0 years of experience, or PhD and 0 years of experience
  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Ability and willingness to obtain and maintain a DOE "L" clearance
  • Ability to use scientific rules and methods to solve problems
  • Ability to identify complex problems, evaluate options, and implement solutions
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles and ability to interpret GD&T callouts on engineering drawings
  • Exposure to mechanical or electrical design tools, CAD, and drafting standards
  • Ability to operate job-related equipment and drive a vehicle
  • Must meet physical requirements including occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds
  • Males born after December 31, 1959 must have registered with the Selective Service System to be eligible for employment
