About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Evaluate, curate, price, promote, and grow brands/products in the assigned category
- Cultivate strong vendor partnerships and source new suppliers
- Manage assortment according to category, trend, and team objectives
- Collaborate with the Category Manager and team on business strategies and growth objectives
- Own category KPIs for brands, products, pricing, gross margin, promotions, and product lifecycle
- Negotiate vendor pricing, marketing and promotional budgets, opportunity buys, growth incentives, delivery, and payment terms
- Foster relationships with existing and new vendors to drive sales, product innovation, margin growth, and promotional support
- Negotiate contracts and handle product evaluation, quality issues, and customer service questions
- Create and maintain supplier and product databases
- Drive new product and brand onboarding and maintenance
- Calculate, maintain, and evaluate costs, pricing, and product adjustments
- Coordinate with Inventory Management and Planning on inventory turns, forecasts, projections, service levels, order cycles, rebates, marketing programs, and supply chain practices
- Develop profitable promotional co-op activities with Marketing
- Create, review, and use reports for category analysis
- Comply with company policies and procedures
- May direct and support Assistant Buyers through development and mentoring
Requirements
What you’ll need- Strong, successful and proven negotiating skills
- Strong analytical, data management and decision-making abilities
- Strong mathematical skills with an understanding of retail pricing concepts
- Ability to communicate written and verbally in a professional manner with people at all levels of the organization and external contacts
- Great attention to detail, highly organized with strong project management skills
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, problem solve and prioritize with an awareness of importance and deadlines
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Experience with Google Business Suite (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Forms) preferred
- WMS, EDI, SAP, Tableau experience a plus
- Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive experience in buying or directly related role with equivalent responsibilities
- Preferably experience in an e-commerce environment
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Merchandising or related field preferred, or a combination of education and equivalent work experience
