About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Build and maintain scalable backend payment flows, including charges, refunds, dispute resolution, and asynchronous webhooks
Design, implement, and maintain RESTful and GraphQL APIs
Develop microservices architectures and event-driven systems consumed by downstream services
Refactor legacy codebases and execute service migrations
Deprecate outdated APIs and increase test coverage
Write clean, production-ready code with unit, integration, and contract tests
Manage version control, branch workflows, and automated deployment pipelines through GitLab CI/CD
Participate in sprint planning, peer code reviews, architectural discussions, and Agile/Scrum ceremonies
Triage and resolve production incidents in high-concurrency payment and billing environments
Use logging and monitoring tools for observability
Produce architectural designs, API specifications, Knowledge Transfer documents, and operational runbooks
Collaborate with full-time core engineers, product managers, and distributed cross-functional teams
Accelerate near-term payment feature delivery while reducing technical debt and modernizing infrastructure

Requirements

What you’ll need

3+ years of backend software engineering experience building and operating production backend services at scale
Direct exposure to payments, fintech, or billing domains, including payment gateways, processors, or PSPs
Strong proficiency in Java as the primary language
Working knowledge of Kotlin and Python
Hands-on experience with microservices
Experience with event-driven distributed systems, message queues, asynchronous processing, and eventual consistency
Experience with relational databases, especially MySQL, and SQL
Expertise in RESTful and GraphQL APIs
Experience writing unit, integration, and contract tests
Experience designing internal APIs for downstream clients
Proven experience building end-to-end backend payment flows
Experience refactoring legacy systems and resolving payment-system production incidents
Experience with version control and CI/CD via GitLab
Experience with Jira task and sprint tracking
Experience working within Agile/Scrum methodologies
Ability to ramp up quickly on existing codebases with minimal supervision
Strong asynchronous collaboration skills across distributed teams
Availability to cover Indian Standard Time hours, preferably 10:00 AM–7:00 PM IST
English required for interviews, documentation, and daily communication
Nice to have: Spring Boot, Gradle, service mesh architectures, PCI-DSS compliance, payment security, financial data handling, Datadog, open-source contributions, or a portfolio of shipped payment features
