About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide technical advice and expertise on technology projects
  • Support development of information rights policy
  • Support supervisory functions relating to qualified trust services under UK eIDAS
  • Contribute technical expertise to digital identity, authentication, trust services, digital credentials and associated technologies
  • Support technical assessments, investigations, research activities and regulatory projects relating to online trust
  • Participate in assessments of trust service providers and related regulatory and technical evaluations
  • Build relationships within the ICO and translate technical insights into regulatory and policy outcomes
  • Provide strategic advice through briefings, analysis and recommendations
  • Monitor developments in online trust and implications for information rights, including standards, interoperability, privacy, security, fraud prevention, usability and inclusion
  • Develop relationships with stakeholders across government, industry, academia and standards bodies
  • Represent the ICO in technical discussions, conferences, workshops and meetings
  • Contribute to organisational capability in identity, trust and emerging technologies
  • Undertake structured learning, professional development and specialist technical training

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Solid technical understanding of public key infrastructure (PKI)
  • Knowledge of cryptographic concepts enabled by PKI, including encryption, digital signatures, authentication and non-repudiation
  • Up-to-date knowledge of system architecture for digital identity or trust services
  • Familiarity with technical standards and specifications relating to identity verification, authentication, credential issuance, digital credentials, trust services or secure data exchange is advantageous
  • Familiarity with ETSI trust services framework, ISO 18103 mdoc, OpenID, W3C verifiable credentials and related technologies is welcomed
  • Strong analytical and research skills
  • Ability to identify emerging technology trends, developments and related issues
  • Ability to manage a demanding workload with conflicting demands
  • Strong desire and aptitude to continually develop technical knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills, including explaining technical matters to non-technical audiences
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain working relationships
  • Excellent literacy and written communication skills
  • Ability to travel to meetings and events in the UK and overseas, possibly outside office hours
  • Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) clearance required
