About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Own the architecture for AI voice agent platforms, next-best-action AI assistant guidance, or standalone AI agents across voice, chat, and SMS
Design real-time, low-latency systems for in-call intent detection and next-best-action suggestions
Design orchestration layers exposing AI agent workflows as reusable, callable actions with output contracts and versioning
Define patient/customer identification, context retrieval, escalation contracts, safe failure, human handoff, and audit trails
Drive AI agent evaluation and reliability frameworks and set SLOs for agent-facing services
Lead high- and low-level technical design reviews across backend services
Drive architectural consistency across ticketing, case management, scheduling, transcription, and speech-processing services
Design and build asynchronous Python backend services using FastAPI and Django
Model data across MongoDB and PostgreSQL
Build Kafka-based event streams for cross-service and agent-to-core communication
Work hands-on with LLM/AI agent tooling such as LangChain, pydantic-ai, and MLflow
Set testing, observability, and production triage standards
Mentor senior and mid-level engineers on distributed systems and AI-agent design
Partner with product to scope and sequence ambiguous initiatives into phased technical plans
Apply healthcare security and compliance practices to PHI handling, audit logging, authentication, and agent context retrieval

Requirements

What you’ll need

8+ years of backend engineering experience
Demonstrated technical ownership of a complex, multi-service system
Strong proficiency in Python, including async programming (asyncio)
Production experience with FastAPI or Django
Experience designing distributed, multi-service architectures
Experience with event-driven systems such as Kafka
Experience with service-to-service authentication, webhook-based integrations, and idempotency/retry design
Experience with MongoDB or another NoSQL database
Working knowledge of relational databases such as PostgreSQL
Direct production experience building or operating conversational AI / voice agent systems, including telephony, IVR, or conversational voice platforms
Experience with latency-sensitive real-time pipelines involving speech-to-text, speaker separation, and text-to-speech
Experience designing real-time decisions from streaming context with confidence thresholds and human-in-the-loop escalation
Experience with LLM/agent frameworks
Working understanding of agent evaluation and reliability practices
Track record of driving architecture decisions across teams and writing and reviewing technical design documents
Experience mentoring other engineers
Comfortable with Docker/containerized deployments, CI/CD, and observability tooling
Proficient with Git and collaborative workflows
Experience with healthcare data security and compliance practices, including PHI handling, audit logging, OAuth/JWT authentication, and minimum-necessary data scoping
