About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Report directly to the Claims Manager
  • Oversee the overall work product of a claims unit comprising Claims Specialists and Claims Assistants
  • Coach, counsel, mentor, and provide performance feedback to unit personnel
  • Monitor work performance for compliance with company standards and Labor Code rules and regulations
  • Conduct timely performance reviews for all personnel in the assigned unit
  • Exercise monetary approval authority up to the assigned authority level
  • Maintain selected files on personal diary, including files reserved over $50,000, subrogation files, delayed or denied benefits files, SIU-assigned files, and files with unresolved coverage issues
  • Provide clients with requested information, reports, records, logs, and other documentation
  • Address personnel issues and keep the Claims Manager informed about corrective action
  • Identify and develop at least one individual as supervisor backup
  • Perform quarterly audits of 10% of each Claims Specialist's open inventory
  • Improve claims management processes and claim results
  • Promote teamwork and cooperation across claims personnel and other departments
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Claims Manager

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Five or more years of progressive technical claim experience
  • High degree of judgment and discretion
  • Ability to provide adequate guidance on complex claim cases
  • Ability to negotiate settlements effectively
  • Working knowledge of the Labor Code of the State of California as it pertains to workers compensation claims and the legal requirements for handling them
  • Project management skills, including developing project plans, coordinating projects, communicating changes and progress, completing projects on time and budget, and managing project team activities
  • Change management skills, including developing implementation plans, communicating changes, building commitment, overcoming resistance, supporting affected personnel, monitoring transitions, and evaluating results
  • Leadership and people-management skills
  • Ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily
  • Ability to work in the office one day per week in Houston, TX
