About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Conduct research on ESG performance and challenges in the DRC’s copper and cobalt mining and mineral processing industries
- Draft a chapter on ESG implementation progress and remaining challenges
- Conduct stakeholder interviews, both virtual and in person
- Conduct potential fieldwork, including mine-site visits and visits to communities affected by mining and mineral processing
- Analyze legal and regulatory texts, policy documents, academic literature, and industry reports
- Conduct complementary desk-based research
- Participate in inception discussions with the project team
- Prepare a detailed chapter outline for approval
- Draft a chapter with complete citations and references to secondary sources and primary data
- Revise the chapter based on internal and external reviewer comments
- Participate in review meetings as required
- Deliver an inception note, annotated chapter outline, stakeholder interview summary report, first draft, and final draft
- Provide recommendations to improve ESG practices of copper and cobalt mining and processing companies in the DRC
Requirements
What you’ll need- Master’s degree in law, social sciences, public policy, environment, development studies, or a relevant interdisciplinary program or field
- Applicants without a master’s degree may apply if they can demonstrate equivalent experience
- Authorization to work in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, such as nationality, residence, valid work permit, or short-term visa to conduct research
- At least 4 years of relevant professional experience in the DRC connected to mining governance, mining policy, ESG management, sustainable development, or related fields
- Demonstrated experience contributing to or independently delivering research, analysis, and policy recommendations related to mining and sustainable development
- Demonstrated experience conducting multistakeholder consultations as part of policy research
- Demonstrated experience building relationships with government, civil society, or community groups
- Strong analytical and writing skills
- Working knowledge of policy research methods, including qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis
- Familiarity with sustainable development, policy theory, and current climate and energy policy issues is highly desirable
- Willingness and ability to learn in sustainable development, policy theory, and climate and energy policy areas
- Computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office/Teams
- Experience using web-based communications and collaboration tools
- Ability to work on shared documents in Microsoft 365 environments
- Fluency in English and French
- Technical proposal of maximum 5 pages, including understanding of the assignment, methodology, chapter outline, work plan and timeline, and relevant experience
- CV and two relevant writing samples
- Applications must be submitted in English
- Incomplete and late proposals will be automatically disqualified
