About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Assess and monitor patient therapy under physician direction and supervision
- Assist physicians with examinations and procedures
- Maintain efficient and appropriate patient flow
- Perform venipuncture, access implanted ports, and maintain central venous access devices and alternate delivery systems
- Document all elements of patient care
- Communicate pertinent information and interventions to physicians or mid-level providers
- Serve as a resource to medical assistants and LPNs
- Triage patient/family phone calls and document relevant information
- Assess patient/family needs and provide teaching
- Assist with referrals using community resources when necessary
- Mentor/precept and provide day-to-day guidance to less experienced nurses
- Confirm informed consent before study-specific tasks
- Identify patients requiring increased nursing assessment and collaborate with the healthcare team to ensure safety
- Educate patients regarding study procedures and protocol-agent adherence
- Collaborate with investigators on treatment schedules and drug-dose modifications
- Coordinate communication between research and clinical staff
- Provide evidence-based symptom management as permitted by protocol
- Administer investigational compounds and/or chemotherapy/biotherapy according to protocol and regulations
- Perform protocol-required labs, samples, vital signs, and ECGs
- Record study procedures, medication lists, and infusion reactions
Requirements
What you’ll need- Current BLS and ACLS certification, or obtain within 90 days of employment
- Current Registered Nursing License in the state where the role is based for RNs
- OCN preferred
- IV and venous access device management skills
- Chemotherapy/Biotherapy administration experience
- Knowledge of standard oncology care practices
- Knowledge of age-specific physiological and developmental differences
- Ability to perform venipuncture, access implanted ports, and maintain central venous access devices
- Knowledge of reimbursement procedures and charge capture
- Ability to follow OSHA guidelines when handling cytotoxic agents and biohazardous waste
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality
- Ability to perform study-required procedures, including lab collection, sample collection, vital signs, and ECGs
- Ability to administer investigational compounds and/or chemotherapy/biotherapy according to protocols and regulations
