About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Serve as IREN's internal subject matter expert in mechanical and HVAC engineering
  • Provide technical guidance on air-side cooling, cooling distribution, fluid systems, thermal management, CFD, and mechanical plant design for next-generation and industrialized data centers
  • Develop and maintain cooling system layouts, equipment schedules, fluid schematics, CFD analyses, thermal performance models, and design basis documents
  • Evaluate emerging mechanical and HVAC technologies, equipment, and methodologies
  • Recommend improvements to thermal performance, system efficiency, and deployability
  • Partner with NGDC and IMDC project engineers to translate Innovation standards and concepts into executable designs
  • Review and technically approve mechanical designs, calculations, and specifications
  • Support modular and prefabricated mechanical assemblies through design, factory acceptance testing, and field commissioning
  • Coordinate mechanical and HVAC designs with electrical, structural, controls, and construction teams
  • Participate in design reviews, interface meetings, and technical workshops
  • Identify and escalate cross-discipline interface issues to the VP, Mechanical Innovation
  • Support engineering, construction, and commissioning teams with RFIs, design clarifications, submittals, and field technical support
  • Support commissioning, functional testing, thermal performance validation, troubleshooting, and as-commissioned documentation
  • Capture field learnings to improve mechanical engineering standards and reduce future rework
  • Develop and maintain standards, design criteria, equipment specifications, and calculation templates aligned with ASHRAE, SMACNA, ASME, NFPA, and IREN requirements
  • Produce complete technical documentation of design intent, thermal assumptions, and interface requirements

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 12+ years of progressive mechanical engineering experience with deep specialization in HVAC and cooling systems, including air-side cooling design, cooling distribution, fluid system engineering, thermal modeling, and CFD analysis
  • Experience in data center, mission-critical, energy, or industrial infrastructure
  • Experience developing mechanical engineering design deliverables, including cooling system layouts, fluid schematics, equipment schedules, CFD studies, and design basis documents, suitable for construction and procurement
  • Experience across innovation/development and project execution environments
  • Ability to coordinate mechanical decisions with electrical, structural, controls, and construction stakeholders
  • Clear and precise written and verbal technical communication
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering required
  • PE registration preferred
  • Hyperscale or owner-operator data center experience highly valued
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required, estimated at 20–35%
  • Authorization to work in the United States
