About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead the technology vision for JSTOR’s Business platform team for Books and Royalty Payments
- Define and evolve backend architecture, distributed systems, search platform, APIs, data pipelines, and engineering practices
- Define and drive the multi-year backend technology strategy and architectural roadmap
- Lead architectural decisions across multiple engineering teams through influence and technical leadership
- Evaluate emerging backend, AI, and distributed systems technologies
- Design, build, and improve highly available ordering and digital book fulfillment systems
- Drive practical use of AI in engineering and operations
- Establish analytics, experimentation, observability, service reliability, and platform operations strategies
- Define engineering health metrics and platform success measures
- Build reusable services, frameworks, tooling, platform capabilities, and engineering practices
- Mentor engineers and technical leaders
- Drive architectural documentation, technical decision records, and engineering guidance
- Partner with Product, AI, External Partners, Data Science, and Platform Engineering
- For Principal level: own technical integrity of ordering, fulfillment, invoicing, and royalty payment flows; define reliability standards; oversee integrations; communicate strategy and represent the platform in architecture forums
Requirements
What you’ll need- 12+ years of experience designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems for the Principal-level role
- Experience designing, building, and operating distributed backend systems in production
- Experience defining technology strategy and leading cross-team architectural initiatives
- Experience balancing hands-on engineering with long-term architecture, platform evolution, product strategy, and organizational priorities
- Strong product thinking connecting backend and search strategy to user needs, business goals, product outcomes, and measurable impact
- Deep expertise building distributed backend systems using Java or Python
- Extensive experience with service-oriented architectures, REST APIs, asynchronous processing, and event-driven systems
- Deep understanding of cloud-native architecture, scalability, reliability engineering, performance optimization, and modern observability practices
- Experience with Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, observability tooling, relational and NoSQL databases, caching technologies, and messaging platforms
- Experience building reusable platform capabilities, engineering standards, developer tooling, automation, and AI-assisted development workflows
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- For Principal level: experience with financially consequential systems; idempotent processing, deduplication, outbox and event-driven patterns, reconciliation, partial-failure recovery; production platform evolution; CRM, Finance, tax engine, and external partner integrations; reliability programs with SLOs, operational metrics, and incident practice
- Domain experience in publishing, digital content licensing, royalty or rights management, or revenue operations is preferred
- Must be able to work and reside in the continental United States
- Must not require immigration sponsorship or additional/permanent work authorization sponsorship to work in the United States
