About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Assist JFK Partners, senior counsel, and senior associates in representing Indigenous clients
  • Work on Indigenous constitutionalism, inherent jurisdiction, law-making, and legal strategies
  • Support rights assertions, advocacy, and negotiation of jurisdictional and relationship agreements
  • Handle regulatory, consultation, and decision-making recognition matters
  • Assist with co-development of Crown legislation
  • Participate in negotiations with governments and industry
  • Support governance revitalization, Indigenous decision-making, written law, and internal consultation
  • Develop and implement client strategies with firm partners
  • Understand and address client needs
  • Support negotiations, project management, and strategic planning
  • Assist with day-to-day file management
  • Participate in negotiations and consultation-related meetings
  • Draft relationship, project decision-making, impact-benefit, and other agreements
  • Advise Indigenous leadership and knowledge keepers on governance matters
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and development support to junior and mid-level lawyers

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 8+ years of experience in drafting agreements, advising on governance matters, or Aboriginal law generally (or equivalent experience)
  • Demonstrated experience negotiating agreements, leading strategic change in organizations, or supporting senior lawyers
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Strong critical thinking skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Eligible to practice law in Ontario as a member of the Law Society of Ontario
  • Ability to work confidently with a team and independently
  • Valid driver's license
