About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Own projects end to end, from breaking down requirements with product to design, delivery, and production follow-up
- Design and build backend services and event-driven integrations between client systems and third-party partners
- Design event schemas and data models for reliable and consistent asynchronous systems
- Review AI-generated and peer code for correctness, maintainability, and data quality
- Produce design documents and diagrams, and explain technical tradeoffs to product and non-technical stakeholders
- Provide timelines and effort estimates, and escalate risks early
- Switch between languages and codebases as priorities shift, including fixing urgent defects outside the primary stack
- Support less senior engineers through pairing and code review
Requirements
What you’ll need- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building production backend systems
- 5+ years of backend development in Go and at least one additional language such as .NET, Node.js, or Python
- Proven willingness to learn and use additional programming languages as required
- Production experience with AWS, including Lambda, S3, EKS (Kubernetes), and CloudFront
- Infrastructure as code experience with Terraform or CloudFormation
- Production experience with Kafka or equivalent event streaming platforms, including partitioning strategy, consumer group scaling, and schema registries
- Hands-on experience designing and serving GraphQL APIs with Apollo or Hasura, including schema federation and resolver performance optimization
- Strong relational data modeling with production experience in PostgreSQL or MySQL
- Experience with NoSQL stores such as DynamoDB or MongoDB
- Experience implementing observability with Datadog or comparable APM tooling, including dashboards, alerting, and SLO/SLI tracking
- Experience building and maintaining Jenkins CI/CD pipelines, including pipeline as code and deployment automation
- Practical, daily use of AI coding tools such as Claude Code in development workflows
- Strong system design and architecture skills, including leading design reviews and RFCs
- Experience mentoring junior and mid-level engineers
