About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide in-depth 1:1 business advising to under-resourced farmers and ranchers
- Build trust-based relationships and directly manage a portfolio of active and alumni clients
- Participate in the client lifecycle, including recruitment and support through inflection points and possible farm transitions/exits
- Advise clients on business planning, markets and marketing, financial management, recordkeeping, cash-flow projections, budgeting, crop plans, access to capital and land, and organizational management
- Connect clients with tools, knowledge, skills, and resources
- Leverage KTA team expertise and support other Business Advisors
- Participate in regional partnerships with nonprofits, farm technical assistance providers, and other organizations
- Report to and collaborate with the Regional Program Director
- Participate in team meetings, 1:1 check-ins, reflection, and feedback processes
- Create and manage an annual work plan
- Support client gatherings, communications, recruitment, training spaces, and other program activities
- Capture and manage client data in Salesforce and provide system design feedback
- Inform program strategy and goals
- Collaborate with Development and Communications teams on farm tours, storytelling, grants, and communications
- Support regional ecosystem efforts
- Represent KTA at conferences, network, build relationships, and identify resources
- Participate in shared leadership activities, interviews, and administrative tasks such as timesheets, expense reports, and meeting scheduling
Requirements
What you’ll need- 5+ years experience running a small business or providing coaching, consulting or technical assistance to small business owners, preferably food or farm businesses
- 2+ years of on-the-ground experience on a farm as a farm business owner or farm worker
- 2+ years hands-on experience with business and financial analysis, practical business planning, and financial management and decision making
- General understanding of direct-to-consumer and wholesale market channels
- Understanding of, or ability to quickly learn, networks and relationships with sustainable farms, food businesses, nonprofit partners, and related organizations in Northern California
- High emotional intelligence and ability to navigate delicate situations and relationships
- Ability to stay organized, manage multiple projects and priorities, and reprioritize as needed
- Demonstrated passion for sustainable food and farms
- Access to a vehicle and ability to drive within a multi-county region and outside the region for team events and conferences
- Ability to work nights and weekends occasionally for events
- Bilingual English/Spanish required; native Spanish speaker highly preferred
- Valid driver’s license required
- Live in the region served by the position
- Experience with the regional food system required
