About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Own Klaviyo’s approach to enterprise scalability, performance, reliability, and multi-region readiness
- Identify and remove major bottlenecks using production data, profiling, and reproducible benchmarks
- Establish measurable targets for latency, throughput, error rates, and capacity
- Build a shared scale-readiness scorecard and align teams on service-level objectives, error budgets, and performance expectations
- Design and implement sharding, partitioning, caching, back-pressure, workload isolation, and multi-region strategies
- Build safe paths for high-volume data migrations
- Create benchmarks, profiling harnesses, and test environments for independent team use
- Lead scalability reviews and establish release gates
- Lead technical incident deep dives, identify systemic causes, and deliver lasting fixes
- Apply AI-assisted profiling, workload modeling, synthetic traffic, anomaly detection, and guided runbooks with guardrails
- Communicate priorities, tradeoffs, and results to engineers and executives
- Report to the VP of Engineering as a senior individual contributor with no direct reports
Requirements
What you’ll need- 12+ years of relevant engineering experience
- Deep experience scaling multi-tenant SaaS
- Track record of removing significant bottlenecks and demonstrating measurable production impact
- Hands-on experience with performance engineering, capacity planning, sharding and partitioning, caching, back-pressure, tenant isolation, multi-region architectures, and large-scale migrations
- Ability to investigate unfamiliar systems, test hypotheses, write production code, and roll out changes safely
- Sound technical judgment to evaluate architectural tradeoffs
- Ability to align teams around shared outcomes, clarify ownership, and establish practical standards
- Ability to explain complex technical decisions and business implications to engineering and executive audiences
- Applied AI tools or automation experience in engineering work
- Ability to evaluate AI usefulness, limitations, and operational risks
- Responsible AI fluency, including privacy, security, bias awareness, and human-in-the-loop practices
