  • Own mechanical and electrical systems through the full technical lifecycle, from concept and prototyping through validation, manufacturing, and field deployment
  • Coordinate internal and external hardware and software engineering resources
  • Define system architectures and navigate technical tradeoffs involving cost, complexity, and timelines
  • Collaborate with data systems and exploration teams to integrate new data streams into KoBold’s proprietary data system
  • Ensure instrumentation and generated data meet mineral exploration user needs and field requirements
  • Build partnerships and source and contract with service providers and vendors
  • Create product plans and mechanical and electrical designs from concept through prototyping and production
  • Contribute engineering expertise, analysis, and design to hardware projects across KoBold
  • Develop hardware development tools, processes, and organizational discipline
  • Report to the Head of Subsurface Imaging and collaborate with data scientists, engineers, and geoscientists

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Successful track record developing and deploying complex state-of-the-art scientific instruments: about five years after a PhD, or correspondingly more after a BS or MS
  • Experience deploying and supporting complex equipment to remote sites, including commissioning, validation, training, and monitoring
  • Ability to serve as technical lead, project manager, product manager, and hands-on engineer
  • Excellent communication skills in a highly interdisciplinary workplace
  • Extensive experience executing end-to-end technical product development from concept through testing and deployment
  • Extensive experience with physical measurement and data analysis systems
  • Experience applying scientific knowledge to identify and prototype emerging technologies
  • Experience with automation, systems integration, and data acquisition
  • Mechanical or electrical design for scientific instruments and processing of measured signals
  • Vendor selection and management
  • Third-party contractor selection and management
  • Ability and desire to take ownership of large projects
  • Ability to independently prioritize multiple tasks effectively
  • Valid passport and willingness to travel to Mingomba or exploration sites around the world
  • Ability to work out of the Berkeley, CA office on any given day of the week
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally 20–30% of the time
  • Helpful but not required: product management for scientific hardware; particle detectors, optics, and electronics; seismic, acoustic, or other geophysical instrumentation; mineral exploration and geology experience

Benefits

Comp & perks
