About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead legal support for KOHO’s product development and regulatory strategy across KOHO Tech and KOHO Bank
  • Partner across KOHO Tech and KOHO Bank to provide practical regulatory advice
  • Support the design and launch of new financial products and features
  • Identify regulatory risks early and help teams build compliant solutions
  • Support establishment and operationalization of a regulated bank
  • Support engagement with regulators such as OSFI, FCAC, and the Bank of Canada
  • Advise Marketing and Growth teams on compliant financial-services and consumer-protection campaigns
  • Guide customer-facing teams on complaint handling, communications, and fairness considerations
  • Build scalable legal and regulatory processes
  • Support Legal knowledge management
  • Mentor Legal team members
  • Represent Legal in cross-functional and leadership forums

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 10+ years of post-call experience as a lawyer practicing in Canada, with substantial in-house experience
  • Direct experience advising on the launch of retail banking products
  • Experience with financial services regulation, banking law, and consumer protection frameworks
  • Ability to operate with significant autonomy and deliver practical, business-oriented legal advice to senior stakeholders
  • Track record of leading complex legal or regulatory initiatives with minimal oversight
  • Experience working at both a large bank and a smaller tech startup or fintech is nice to have
  • Experience engaging directly with regulators is nice to have
  • Lobbying or government relations experience is nice to have
  • Familiarity with the RPAA and the Financial Consumer Protection Framework (FCPF) is nice to have
  • AML advisory experience at a bank is nice to have
  • Experience implementing privacy laws is nice to have
  • Experience mentoring or managing junior legal counsel is nice to have
  • Fluent in French is nice to have
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada
  • Must be called to the bar in Canada
