About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Operate power-driven excavator equipped with a movable shovel to excavate or move dirt, rock, sand, and other materials
  • Receive written or oral instructions from the supervisor regarding material to move or excavate
  • Operate machine controls to move, lower, push, lift, swing, and dump shovel contents smoothly and safely
  • Work with pipe on utility jobs and safely inside trench boxes
  • Move or place materials on bridge jobs as needed
  • Observe ground markings, hand signals, and grade stakes when removing material at excavation or utility sites
  • Inspect, clean, maintain, and lubricate equipment
  • Work in a safe and responsible manner
  • Work around moving mechanical parts, construction equipment, weather conditions, fumes, airborne particles, vibration, chemicals, electrical hazards, and loud noise
  • No supervisory responsibilities

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Prior experience in the position required
  • Minimum four to ten years related experience and/or training
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals in English
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with limited standardization
  • Ability to interpret written, oral, diagram, or schedule instructions
  • Certified or approved by Safety Department, Equipment Manager, or Operations Manager
  • Licensed as required by local jurisdiction
  • Must pass practical test
  • Must be willing to travel
  • Must be willing to work 7-day/12-hour shifts with an extended work schedule
  • Ability to perform essential duties satisfactorily
  • Ability to regularly work or walk on uneven ground or onboard floating equipment
  • Ability to access and leave barges, boats, and piers from moving surfaces
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
