About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Assess and counsel pediatric and adult patients using nutrition science
  • Create individualized diet plans for health promotion, disease management, weight control, and complex or acute nutritional concerns
  • Build trusting relationships with patients and families and provide practical nutrition guidance
  • Help patients set SMART goals and monitor behavioral and biometric progress
  • Evaluate diet history, 24-hour recall, food frequency, laboratory data, body composition, interviews, and shared decision-making outcomes
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary care teams and consult providers regarding diagnoses and progress
  • Document patient services in electronic health records and other required data systems
  • Manage patient schedules and desktop in the electronic health record system
  • Maintain counseling equipment and instructional materials
  • Meet agency and contract requirements for appointment volume, appointment type, and billing
  • Collect and report monthly statistics and other required reports
  • Design and evaluate initiatives related to diet-related illness
  • Participate in quality and performance improvement programs
  • Consult clinic staff on nutrition information and patient referrals
  • Participate in nutrition, provider, clinic, departmental, and agency meetings
  • Attend required training workshops and meetings
  • Monitor assigned budgets for Units of Services and nutritional supplement spending, if applicable
  • Direct support staff, if assigned
  • Advise patients on health and illness prevention, voluntary family planning, and preventive health services
  • Perform other assigned duties and functions outlined in the Dietitian Delineation of Privileges

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in dietetics, nutrition, or a related field required
  • Must be a Registered Dietitian (RD)
  • Must hold an active license in the state of Texas
  • Evidence of current competence within the last 12 months to perform privileges requested
  • Completion of required continuing education to maintain Texas licensure
  • Provider shall obtain, maintain and participate in Medicare and Medicaid Programs, workers’ compensation, federal and state reimbursement programs, and requested commercial insurance and health benefit programs
  • Master’s Degree or 2 years of experience working as a dietitian and/or providing nutrition counseling and education to clients
  • Experience working as a dietitian and/or providing nutrition counseling and education to clients
  • Experience with computers and computer programs
  • Experience with nutritional needs for persons with chronic conditions such as diabetes
  • Bilingual English/Spanish desirable
  • Experience working in a healthcare system desirable
  • Experience working in an electronic health record system desirable
  • Experience with nutritional needs for persons living with HIV desirable
