About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Represent individual clients in litigation in state and federal courts
- Handle administrative hearings and appellate practice
- Primarily assist domestic violence survivors with Family and Immigration matters
- Handle Family Offense proceedings to obtain Orders of Protection, Custody, Visitation, and Child Support
- Assist with domestic violence-related immigration matters, including U-Visa applications, Battered Spouse Waivers, Self-Petitions, and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS)
- Potentially assist crime victims with housing, public benefits, and consumer debt matters
- Manage a high-volume caseload in a fast-paced and demanding environment
- Participate in community legal education and outreach activities
- Adhere to program and case handling standards, funder requirements, and professional standards
- Serve as a resource to LSHV staff and access to justice communities
- Serve individuals and families living in Westchester and Putnam County who qualify
Requirements
What you’ll need- Admission to the New York State Bar or passed the NY bar and awaiting admission
- Out of state admission with eligibility for pro hac vice status
- One or more years of legal experience, including litigation and handling high volume caseload
- Excellent people skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to handle high stress situations
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders
- Valid driver's license and own transportation
- Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income persons with prior experience in legal services or similar program (preferred)
- English/Spanish bi-lingual (preferred)
