About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Install, remove, exchange, program, test, calibrate, read, maintain, inspect, and troubleshoot electric meters and associated metering equipment
- Support traditional metering and Liberty’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), including Itron Riva Gen 5 smart meters and communications
- Perform and interpret Full Load, Light Load, and Power Factor testing
- Diagnose AMI communication issues, meter events, alarms, installation issues, and conditions requiring field investigation or replacement
- Verify meter communications and interfaces between field equipment, Liberty systems, and approved customer equipment
- Review meter information and diagnostic data to identify abnormal conditions, wiring or service issues, incorrect configurations, and communication failures
- Install, inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot self-contained and transformer-rated metering installations
- Support customer generation and distributed energy resources, including solar and other generation installations
- Identify unsafe, damaged, deteriorated, or non-compliant meter sockets, service equipment, customer panels, and associated equipment
- Investigate customer concerns involving meter accuracy, usage, partial power, voltage, communications, displays, and AMI functionality
- Explain technical metering information, meter testing, accuracy, equipment condition, and corrective actions to customers
- Work independently or as part of a crew throughout the Lake Tahoe service territory
- Respond to emergency call-outs, outages, damaged electrical equipment, partial-power conditions, meter failures, and customer service issues
- Coordinate with Troublemen, Line Crews, Service Technicians, Customer Service, Engineering, Operations, AMI personnel, contractors, and other departments
- Support AMI deployment and post-deployment activities, including exchanges, non-communicating meters, specialized meter groups, panel issues, and field verification
- Operate company vehicles and assigned equipment safely in mountainous terrain and adverse conditions
- Maintain accurate work records using company-approved systems and applications, including SAP where applicable
- Maintain tools, test equipment, vehicles, computers, communications equipment, and specialized metering equipment
Requirements
What you’ll need- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Successful completion of a recognized Meter Technician/Meterman apprenticeship or equivalent combination of education, technical training, and journey-level metering experience
- Demonstrated journey-level knowledge of electric metering, electrical theory, meter testing, service configurations, and applicable electrical and utility standards
- Experience with electronic and advanced electric meters, meter programming software, computerized test equipment, and AMI systems preferred
- Experience with Itron Riva Gen 5 or comparable advanced metering technology strongly preferred
- Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams, meter forms, service configurations, wiring diagrams, technical manuals, meter data, and company standards
- Ability to troubleshoot electrical, metering, and communications problems using appropriate diagnostic and test equipment
- Ability to perform assigned responsibilities safely, independently, efficiently, and accurately with limited supervision
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
- Ability and willingness to respond to emergency call-outs and work outside normal business hours when operationally required
- Ability to work outdoors year-round in Lake Tahoe conditions, including extreme cold, snow, ice, heat, wildfire smoke, uneven terrain, and high elevation
- Valid driver’s license required
- Must comply with the applicable residency/living requirement, including the established 50-mile living radius of South Lake Tahoe, California, if required by applicable labor agreement or company policy
