About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead the Pensions Investment and Funding Team of specialists
  • Develop and implement investment and funding strategies for Defined Benefit and Defined Contribution schemes
  • Provide day-to-day oversight of schemes’ investment and funding arrangements
  • Advise and support the Trustee and Group Pensions Director on funding, investment, covenant risk and risk management
  • Manage approximately £35bn of pension scheme assets and liabilities within delegated authorities
  • Support strategic objectives and risk tolerance relating to funding, investment and covenant
  • Work with investment and funding committees, the Trustee’s strategic investment adviser and the Group
  • Analyse and challenge investment strategies, including hedging of LDI, FX and longevity risks and asset allocation
  • Manage the portfolio, liquidity, hedges, return potential, de-risking and responses to threats and opportunities
  • Execute and implement strategy, set mandates, monitor and challenge fund managers and manage third-party relationships
  • Ensure delegated authorities remain appropriate for ongoing portfolio management
  • Advise on Defined Contribution investment strategies and identify opportunities to improve member fund choices
  • Maintain robust internal controls and identify emerging risks and de-risking strategies
  • Support funding discussions and collaborate with the Group on asset performance, hedging, liquidity and collateral optimisation
  • Deliver performance, risk and management information and reports to the Trustee and Group
  • Develop and maintain responsible investment and climate risk policies
  • Lead and motivate specialist investment professionals and ensure appropriate team resourcing
  • Monitor market developments

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Proven leadership experience with demonstrable success in a large organisation, ideally with experience working for a major pension fund or in a senior investment role
  • Exceptional stakeholder management skills, including managing politically sensitive relationships and engaging with trustees, advisers, providers and senior Group stakeholders
  • Proven experience navigating highly complex and technical pension funding and investment concepts
  • Knowledge and understanding of liability structures and actuarial assumptions
  • Broad investment knowledge across multiple asset classes and subclasses
  • Knowledge of derivatives and leverage
  • Experience with portfolio construction
  • Experience with techniques to model liabilities and assets and hedge risk
  • Knowledge of contingent capital arrangements
  • Inspiring people leadership and strategic thinking
  • CFA or FIA qualification desirable
