About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Own the people and process side of an engineering organisation of roughly 30–50 people.
  • Own engineering hiring end to end, including funnel design, interview processes, candidate evaluation and role-specific interviews.
  • Work with the Head of Talent to improve hiring-funnel efficiency and conduct substantial interviewing.
  • Own twice-yearly review cycles, the progression framework and calibration across teams.
  • Run review conversations, make compensation recommendations and decide promotions jointly with the CTO.
  • Identify training and conference opportunities for engineers.
  • Diagnose delivery slowdowns and process issues without choosing or prioritising projects.
  • Monitor the balance between maintenance and development work and provide metrics and reporting.
  • Improve engineering processes and standards as the organisation grows.
  • Champion developer experience and adoption of LLM-based tooling through hands-on evaluation.
  • Own cloud spend, SaaS estate, licensing, security processes, starter/leaver access management and company-wide technical onboarding.
  • Run a regular forum with the CTO and tech leads covering hiring pipeline, attrition risk, maintenance/development balance and standards drift.
  • Collaborate with tech leads, whose technical judgment prevails on architecture, technical direction and code-level decisions.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • A software engineering background, with the technical credibility to work alongside strong senior ICs.
  • Proven experience as a people manager of engineers, including running review cycles, progression and calibration.
  • A track record of owning engineering hiring at volume, not just participating, both before and since LLMs changed how we assess candidates.
  • Experience in engineering organisations of around 30–50 people.
  • Comfortable working without enterprise scaffolding: no dedicated HR, IT or procurement teams to lean on.
  • Long experience improving processes, standards and delivery in high-performing engineering teams.
  • Fluent written and spoken English.
  • Hands-on experience rolling out LLM-based developer tooling across a team and measuring its impact (nice to have).
  • Experience managing cloud spend, SaaS estates and licensing (nice to have).
  • Experience owning security processes such as starter and leaver access management (nice to have).
