About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Process multiple monthly payrolls accurately and on time for 3,300 employees across multiple locations
- Ensure compliance with HMRC legislation, company policies and payroll controls
- Act as senior point of contact and subject matter expert for complex payroll queries, escalations, legislation and employee pay matters
- Support payroll management and integration following business acquisitions, including process harmonisation, employee setup and onboarding, and data validation
- Liaise with the outsourced payroll provider regarding employee changes, new starters, leavers, benefits and salary adjustments
- Support in-month national minimum wage analysis
- Advise on payroll legislation, payrolled benefits, pension schemes and statutory payments including Tax, NI, SSP and SMP
- Mentor and oversee junior payroll staff, supporting training and development
- Collaborate with HR, Finance and external stakeholders to maintain data integrity and alignment
- Review and improve payroll processes, systems and controls
- Support employees with commission scheme calculations and queries
- Support payroll reconciliations and month-end/year-end reporting activities
Requirements
What you’ll need- Significant senior-level payroll experience, ideally gained within a complex, multi-site or multi-company organisation
- Minimum 5 years' payroll experience, with substantial experience operating at a senior, supervisory or subject matter expert level
- Proven experience managing payroll for large organisations of 3,000+ employees, with the ability to manage high-volume and complex payroll environments
- Strong and up-to-date knowledge of UK payroll legislation, including PAYE, national insurance, tax codes, statutory payments, national minimum wage/national living wage and other relevant legislation
- Proficient Microsoft Excel, including VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, PivotTables, data analysis and reconciliation techniques
- Experience supporting or leading payroll projects, including acquisitions, system implementations, process improvements and legislative changes
- CIPP qualification desirable but not essential
- Excellent attention to detail, numerical accuracy, analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the confidence to provide expert payroll advice and challenge stakeholders and providers where appropriate
- Highly organised, proactive, and able to manage multiple payroll deadlines and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Driving licence not required
