About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Direct advanced research in natural language processing, computer vision, signal processing, and AI reasoning
  • Lead AI safety research, including literature surveys, experimental design, AI/software engineering, data acquisition, data analysis, and documentation
  • Formulate, design, and manage independent test and evaluation research programs focused on protecting the public from AI system harms
  • Lead and contribute to competitive research proposals using Heilmeier criteria to define scope, methodology, and deliverables
  • Serve as principal investigator for Digital Safety independent test and evaluation research programs
  • Apply advanced technology and AI/software engineering knowledge to execute and manage research programs
  • Analyze experimental results, determine causes of problems, develop solutions, and evaluate technical specifications
  • Plan, design, and complete procedures to validate testing and evaluation results
  • Design and execute research challenges using and improving DSRI evaluation tools
  • Lead the AI specialty community in solving problems important to transition partners
  • Propose and host workshops at leading AI safety research conferences
  • Read papers and scientific publications and attend academic conferences to stay current with changing technologies
  • Contribute to department-specific and cross-functional initiatives

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • PhD in Computer Science with a focus in the applicable AI area of specialty
  • 8 or more years of directly related research experience
  • Demonstrated general knowledge of AI and software engineering disciplines
  • Demonstrated experience securing research funding through competitive proposal development
  • Demonstrated ability to write and win proposals for leading research workshops
  • Demonstrated ability to attract invitations to give keynote presentations
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Advanced AI engineering, software engineering, and data analysis skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with research scientists, engineers, team members, and external partners
  • Ability to publish research results at leading academic conferences
  • Substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art AI and software engineering principles and theories
