About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Develop new UFS Weather Model infrastructure features enabling in-core data assimilation and high-resolution moving nests
Implement robust state management, including saving and advertising states to the NUOPC coupler
Implement rewind capabilities allowing restarts from prior states without numerical drift
Extend coupling support using ESMF for intra-component atmosphere-to-atmosphere exchanges
Design and implement automated regression tests for state management and rewind capabilities
Work with data assimilation teams to enable UFS and JEDI builds with in-core DA capabilities
Explore and develop incremental analysis updates following the rewind step
Use AI-assisted coding and modern software engineering tools
Apply Git-based code management, unit testing, continuous integration, and Agile/DevOps practices
Debug complex model infrastructure and integration issues, including build failures, runtime errors, and coupled-system bugs
Produce clear, high-quality documentation for NWS developers
Collaborate with software engineers, physical scientists, and data assimilation specialists to advance next-generation forecasting infrastructure

Requirements

What you’ll need

Background in computer science, software engineering, meteorology/NWP, applied mathematics, or a closely related field with demonstrated numerical modeling and scientific computing experience
Demonstrated experience with Earth system coupled modeling frameworks and infrastructure
Expertise with ESMF and NUOPC strongly preferred
Familiarity with UFS Weather Model and MPAS highly beneficial
Expertise in modern Fortran and/or C, as well as Python
C++ experience is a strong plus, particularly with JEDI
Proficiency developing and debugging software in Linux or similar environments, including shell scripting/automation
Experience with data assimilation systems, especially JEDI, and IAU initialization techniques strongly preferred
Working knowledge of Git, continuous integration, code testing, and documentation
Familiarity with AI-assisted code development or strong willingness to learn
Experience developing and running Earth system models on HPC platforms
Distributed-memory MPI parallelization and job schedulers such as SLURM and PBS
Familiarity with CMake and CTest
Good verbal and written communication skills in English
Ability to collaborate effectively with software engineers and scientists across agencies
Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments preferred
Must be a U.S. Citizen or Green Card Holder
