About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Develop, operate, and maintain high-quality, cost-efficient data platforms and services for public sector organisations
  • Tailor data platforms and services to client needs and maximise value for analysts, scientists, and business stakeholders
  • Serve as a senior contributor on projects, delivering hands-on engineering work
  • Upskill members of client teams and participate in skill-transfer sessions
  • Ensure delivery outcomes for users and alignment between operational and analytical aspects of engineering solutions
  • Contribute to the continued development of Made Tech’s Data and AI Practice
  • Represent Made Tech internally and publicly through presentations
  • Share knowledge and participate in practice development

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Hands-on knowledge of programming languages, particularly Python
  • Practical experience with major cloud providers including GCP, Azure, or AWS
  • Knowledge of core software engineering concepts such as DRY and SOLID
  • Proficiency in version control systems, specifically Git or similar tools
  • Demonstrated application of TDD and testing methodologies, including data quality, integration, and unit testing
  • Ability to leverage CI/CD pipelines
  • Knowledge of Data Engineering fundamentals, including Batch/Streaming and ETL/ELT
  • Familiarity with data architectures such as data lakes and warehouses
  • Hands-on experience with data cleansing and transformation within unified, standardised schemas
  • Experience with one or more of analytics and platform frameworks, orchestration tools such as Airflow or AWS Glue, database technologies, data processing libraries and schema management tools such as Pandas and Pydantic, and storage formats such as JSON and Parquet
  • Experience with IaC tools, particularly Terraform
  • Understanding of logging, monitoring, and alerting for enterprise-level pipelines
  • Understanding of access controls, policies, and approaches
  • Ability to gather basic requirements from clients and users and turn them into demonstrable outcomes
  • Knowledge of documenting and diagramming systems
  • Communication skills to explain concepts to stakeholders at different levels
  • Ability to coordinate with Product and Delivery managers
  • Eligibility for SC security clearance, requiring 5 years of continuous UK residency and a 5-year employment history or history back to full-time education
  • Desirable: technology consultancy experience
  • Desirable: Docker and virtual environments
  • Desirable: specialised data platforms, such as geospatial data
  • Desirable: pair programming or mob programming
  • Desirable: productionising advanced data deliverables such as machine learning models
  • Desirable: working knowledge of statistics
