About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Perform independent analysis for new commercial loan requests, primarily large and complex relationships
- Independently review existing commercial lending relationships
- Identify and summarize risks, strengths, weaknesses, recommended risk ratings, alternative structures, and policy deviations
- Meet independently with commercial loan officers to discuss issues and ask questions
- Mentor and support lower-level analysts
- Assist management with oversight of the commercial and/or entire loan portfolio
- Work on projects affecting the Commercial Credit department and the bank
- Develop, maintain, and prepare tools and reports for applications, underwriting, relationship reviews, ALLL, and other workflows
- Perform quality underwriting in accordance with commercial lending regulations, policies, and procedures
- Prepare and review in-depth written analyses, spreadsheets, reports, summaries, and opinions
- Review financial and other documents and conduct research
- Perform financial analyses and projections, including what-if scenarios and stress testing
- Develop tools and techniques for complex or unique credit relationships
- Discuss and influence lenders regarding covenants, conditions, alternative structures, modifications, assessments, action plans, and turnaround requirements
- Participate in customer meetings when appropriate
- Serve as a resource on commercial lending policies, underwriting, and approval requirements
- Share analytical knowledge and techniques; train and guide analytical staff
- Request borrower documentation and coordinate services needed for commercial lending
- Assist with oversight, coordination, and support of department members’ work
- Review existing loan files for completeness and accurate, timely updates
- Support management and oversight of the bank’s loan portfolio
- Maintain knowledge of bank loan products, procedures, and regulatory changes
- Assist internal, external, and regulatory auditors with requested materials
- Manage work independently, identify obstacles, meet deadlines, and create action plans
- Maintain relationships with department and organizational leaders
- Protect sensitive and confidential information and comply with bank policies
- Maintain regular attendance and complete required training
- Interact independently with internal and external customers
- Provide Commercial Credit subject-matter information and guidance within the organization
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or Finance; equivalent work experience accepted
- MBA preferred
- Typically 5–7 years’ experience independently underwriting complex commercial loan requests
- Solid background in financial institution operating policies and procedures
- Knowledge of state and federal banking regulations
- Experience with Abrigo/Sageworks or similar statement-spreading software preferred
- Experience with loan origination system software preferred
- Basic familiarity with Salesforce CRM or related CRM platforms preferred
- Strong financial analytical skills and sound judgment
- Excellent knowledge of personal/business financial statements and tax returns
- Knowledge of commercial loan structure and commercial credit standards
- Project management skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365 Office Suite and the Internet
- Commercial Loan Origination Systems administration experience a plus
- Understanding and application of office administration activities and procedures
- Ability to operate standard office equipment
- Smartphone required for MFA access to MSB systems
- Dedicated, distraction-free workspace with adequate lighting for video calls
- Reliable internet connection with adequate bandwidth for Teams and other video calls
- Ability to identify and quantify business risks and key drivers of credit risk
- Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, attention to detail, organizational, communication, and customer service skills
- Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, prioritize competing tasks, and handle confidential information
- English communication ability; Main Street Bank’s standard language is English
- Ability to comply with Bank Secrecy Act regulations, bank policies, operational risk controls, and required training
- Must be able to occasionally lift/move up to 10 pounds
- Ability to remain stationary for more than 75% of the time
- Ability to operate a computer for extended periods
- Occasional local travel and ability to work alternative schedules, including possible early morning, evening, or weekend hours
