About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Represent state officials and agencies in appeals and litigation in state and federal courts
- Defend constitutional and other legal challenges to state statutes and regulations
- Defend suits challenging implementation of state policies and programs
- Handle suits for judicial review of state administrative agency decisions
- Handle trial-court litigation
- Handle appeals in the Appeals Court, SJC, and U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit
- Address constitutional issues, statutory interpretation, and claims concerning the authority of state administrative agencies
- Work within a division representing state agencies and officials in civil litigation and appeals
Requirements
What you’ll need- Must be a member of the Massachusetts bar or have a pending application for admission
- Must be a member of the bar of the United States District Court for Massachusetts or be eligible for admission in short order
- At least three (3) to five (5) years of relevant legal experience is preferred
- Familiarity with constitutional law, administrative law, civil and appellate procedure, and trial practice
- Effective legal writing skills
- Ability to independently handle litigation in the trial and appellate courts
- Demonstrated interest in public service
- Ability to work in a collaborative, public-law environment
- Connection to the people and communities served
- Interest in supporting a respectful and inclusive work environment
