About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Serve as the CTO’s technical deputy and own routine engineering decisions
- Manage day-to-day engineering execution, including pull request reviews, technical approvals, developer support, and issue resolution
- Align with the CTO through proactive communication, early risk escalation, and transparent decision-making
- Contribute to architecture and system design decisions for the next-generation platform
- Evaluate technical options and select pragmatic solutions balancing maintainability, reliability, performance, and delivery speed
- Translate product and research requirements into technical approaches and implementation plans
- Design, build, debug, and maintain databases, backend services, frontend applications, cloud infrastructure, and DevOps solutions
- Prototype capabilities, develop critical components, and provide technical expertise where needed
- Champion AI coding agents across implementation, debugging, investigation, testing, code review, and infrastructure work
- Establish AI-agent usage standards, workflows, guardrails, and verification practices
- Maintain standards for code quality, reviews, automated testing, CI/CD, observability, and operational reliability
- Support established systems and greenfield initiatives
- Reduce key-person dependencies through documentation, knowledge sharing, and distributed ownership
- Identify delivery bottlenecks, resolve blockers, and maintain engineering momentum
- Partner with the CTO, platform architect, engineering, product, and research stakeholders
- Communicate technical decisions, trade-offs, dependencies, and risks to technical and non-technical audiences
Requirements
What you’ll need- 10+ years of software engineering experience, including senior-level experience as a Senior, Staff, or Principal Engineer
- Hands-on expertise across databases, backend development, frontend technologies, and cloud infrastructure or DevOps
- Strong system design and architecture skills
- Experience building, debugging, testing, and maintaining production software across multiple technology layers
- Demonstrated fluency with AI coding agents for software development and debugging across the stack
- Ability to establish engineering practices for effective AI-agent use without compromising quality, security, or reliability
- Ability to operate independently with ambiguous requirements and limited supervision
- Strong decision-making, technical judgment, ownership, accountability, integrity, and follow-through
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
- Ability to mentor and support engineers
- Availability to work full-time with at least three hours of daily overlap with U.S. Pacific morning hours
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
- Broad knowledge of software engineering principles, modern development frameworks, cloud infrastructure, and emerging engineering practices
- Preferred: experience with LLM-powered applications, RAG, tool use, agentic workflows, AI-assisted engineering standards, early-stage or greenfield products, and close collaboration with a CTO or senior technical leader
