About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead the Kernel team as a hands-on engineering technical manager
- Manage, mentor, and grow a team of kernel engineers and software developers
- Set technical direction and execute while remaining an active coding contributor
- Design and implement high-performance compute kernels for specialized AI hardware
- Design and optimize kernels interfacing directly with hardware
- Partner with the ML Research team to maximize output and improve diagnostic tools
- Collaborate with Hardware Engineering to co-design next-generation AI architectures
- Provide programming-perspective expertise on hardware architecture to ensure seamless software-stack integration
- Manage escalations and align stakeholders around infrastructure decisions
Requirements
What you’ll need- 2+ years of engineering team management experience
- 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
- Bachelor of Computer Science or equivalent degree
- Experience optimizing software for specialized hardware using parallelism, SIMD programming, C, assembly-level optimization, or GPU/CUDA programming
- Experience with at least one of assembly, C++, C, Zig, or Rust
- Ability to navigate ambiguity, manage escalations, and align stakeholders around infrastructure decisions
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a track record of translating complex technical trade-offs with founders and stakeholders
- Experience implementing kernels for ML models such as Transformers (bonus)
- Experience using and implementing distributed parallelism techniques such as AllReduce, AllToAll, data parallelism, and tensor parallelism (bonus)
- Familiarity with how compilers work (bonus)
- Capacity to perform job functions in compliance with U.S. export control laws without obtaining a license
- Currently authorized to work in the US
