About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Assess Databricks against PALU’s current and expected data warehouse needs and compare it with MCD’s AWS PostgreSQL environment
- Configure a representative Databricks data model and connectors to priority external data sources
- Prepare cost-benefit analysis, future project plans, and document configurations, tests and findings
- Configure GitLab CI/CD pipelines, schedules and related files for PALU automations, reports, dbt builds and external data extraction
- Configure CI/CD for the new CIMS codebase, including builds, version control, release tagging and test stages
- Configure application logging, pipeline notifications, reporting and access controls
- Coordinate CIMS releases and ODK Central upgrades to avoid disruption to field data collection
- Review AWS account structure, services and costs; identify idle, oversized or duplicated resources
- Implement approved AWS cost-saving opportunities and configure GitLab runners on AWS as needed
- Modernize application deployment using containers and infrastructure as code
- Review documentation, write required configuration code, and provide guidance, training and handover sessions
- Apply security patches and dependency updates, monitor pipelines and infrastructure, fix failures, verify backups and test a restore
- Review AWS and Databricks costs monthly, maintain documentation and runbooks, and resolve Jira maintenance tickets
- Track tasks through Jira and meet weekly with the Digital Health Tools and Systems Lead
- Deliver pilot milestones from onboarding in the first week of November through the end-of-pilot report on December 31
Requirements
What you’ll need- Degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
- At least five years of experience in DevOps, cloud infrastructure or data engineering
- Hands-on experience configuring GitLab CI/CD, including runners, pipeline schedules and protected variables
- Experience administering AWS environments, including identity and access management, EC2, RDS, S3, networking and cost management
- Strong SQL and PostgreSQL skills and working knowledge of Python
- Experience with dbt and building data pipelines from APIs
- Experience applying security practices in cloud environments, including access control, secrets management, backup and recovery
- Clear technical writing in English
- Experience with Databricks or a comparable platform such as Snowflake or BigQuery, including cost modelling
- Experience with ODK Central, DHIS2 or other health information systems
- Experience with containers and infrastructure as code, such as Docker and Terraform
- Previous work supporting health programs in Africa
- Working knowledge of Spanish
- Availability between 1 November and 31 December 2026
- Technical proposal, financial proposal, CV and comparable work references required
- Selected candidates must undergo rigorous reference and background checks
- Must follow MCD security, data protection, confidentiality and data ownership requirements; use MCD-issued accounts and approved systems
