About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Increase the impact of cutting-edge machine learning research by collaborating with researchers and the Mila AI Safety Studio.
  • Design and implement safety guardrails in the public safety domain.
  • Develop dynamic benchmarking, red-teaming simulations, harm-detection guardrails, and automated evaluation methods.
  • Collaborate with the Mila compute cluster team to use computing infrastructure efficiently.
  • Create rigorous internal technical documentation.
  • Document and write a scientific manuscript on the Mila Safety Studio’s work.
  • Collaborate with product managers to understand the requirements needed to design experiments.
  • Work with researchers to select, evaluate, and integrate appropriate AI technologies.
  • Identify applied research opportunities arising from prototypes and user feedback.
  • Optimize research, model training, and inference processes.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Research experience in AI, with multiple publications at major conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, or ICLR.
  • Strong scientific curiosity about applied research in AI safety.
  • Excellent ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to people with varying levels of scientific knowledge.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience with agile software development and product management.
  • PhD in computer science, data science, or a related field.
  • Advanced proficiency in Python.
