About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Manage the day-to-day operations of the Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility
- Supervise 23 OLPR staff, including 12 lawyers
- Review complaints of misconduct against Minnesota attorneys
- Conduct investigations and litigate contested discipline matters before appointed referees and the Minnesota Supreme Court
- Provide legal advice and education programs on professional responsibility
- Collaborate with the Supreme Court’s professional regulatory agencies
- Set investigative priorities, manage case inventory, and ensure timely resolution
- Develop staff and promote consistent decision-making and public confidence
- Oversee Client Security Board activities by screening compensation claims, coordinating investigations, and presenting matters to the Board
- Prepare and administer budgets for both Boards
- Work with volunteer district ethics committees
- Prepare and submit annual and other requested reports
- Conduct statewide outreach and speaking engagements
- Write 8–10 columns per year for the Minnesota State Bar Association’s Bench & Bar journal
- Serve at the pleasure of the Minnesota Supreme Court; performance evaluated by the State Court Administrator with Board input
Requirements
What you’ll need- A law degree from an accredited law school
- A current Minnesota law license
- Extensive experience as an attorney in private or public practice
- At least 3 years of trial and civil litigation experience
- Some appellate experience
- Administrative and supervisory experience
- Experience with attorney discipline cases
- Outstanding writing, public speaking, presentation, and interpersonal skills
- Extensive knowledge of the rules of professional conduct and responsibility governing the legal profession
- Extensive knowledge of related case law and Lawyers Professional Responsibility Board opinions
- Extensive knowledge of substantive and procedural law, Supreme Court rules, and case law
- Extensive knowledge of trial and appellate court procedures and rules of evidence
- Considerable knowledge of modern management and supervisory principles and practices
- Ability to plan, assign, and direct legal and support supervisory work
- Ability to prepare and manage operating budgets
- Ability to advise the Lawyers Professional Responsibility Board and Client Security Board
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with specified legal, governmental, civic, organizational, employee, and public stakeholders
- Offers of employment subject to BCA criminal background check and attorney records check
- 10+ years of overall experience preferred
- Active participation in state or county bar associations highly desirable
- Experience delivering professional education or leading public-facing legal-community initiatives preferred
