About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Meet with and assist self-represented litigants in person, by telephone, mail, LiveChat, Zoom, email, or other electronic means
- Gather information, determine issues, provide forms and completion guidance, review forms, and explain legal concepts and procedures without providing legal advice
- Provide information about legal aid organizations and searching for private-practice attorneys
- Review and research applicable statutes, court procedures, court rules, appellate cases, and other legal resources
- Perform legal research, analysis, and writing on procedural and substantive matters
- Prepare memorandums outlining issues, research, analysis, and recommended courses of action
- Gather Self-Help Center and Early Neutral Evaluation statistics and update reports
- Present Self-Help Center outreach opportunities to district leadership and committees
- Collaborate with court administrators, staff, justice partners, legal service providers, law libraries, bar associations, and community and government organizations
- Provide staff services to judicial committees, including notices, agendas, research, document analysis, meeting summaries, follow-up, and updates
- Develop and implement training and advanced Early Neutral Evaluation training sessions
- Provide legal review for district websites, forms, outreach, and educational materials, including developing new forms
- Troubleshoot issues, handle complaints and conflicts, and solve problems with Early Neutral Evaluation providers and justice partners
- Travel to all Tenth Judicial District counties and attend meetings, trainings, and appointments
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in social services, law, criminal justice, court administration, or a related field
- Valid driver’s license
- Two to three years of experience in a court or legal setting
- Knowledge of substantive and procedural law
- Knowledge of state statutes, rules of court, related case law and opinions, state policies and procedures, alternative dispute resolution methods, and legal reference sources
- Experience drafting and reviewing legal documents
- Ability to analyze, organize, and present facts, law, and precedents
- Demonstrated conflict resolution skills
- Ability to research legal issues using printed and computerized sources
- Competence with Minnesota Case Information System (MNCIS), Microsoft products, Adobe, fillable forms, web-based searches, and legal search software
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters and records appropriately
- Knowledge of local legal and community resources
- Ability to work sensitively with people in crisis and people from diverse backgrounds
- Ability to work in a large judicial district with urban and rural counties
- Access to a vehicle
- Successful completion of a required criminal background check
- Core business hours Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm
