About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify equipment and structures for U.S. Navy fleet modernization on surface ships
  • Perform shipboard alterations and installations of electrical, electronic, and communication systems
  • Work with experienced trades personnel on complex modernization tasks across multiple systems
  • Travel to shipyards and military bases in the Hampton Roads region, throughout the United States, and internationally as needed
  • Read and use blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, work orders, controlled work packages, technical documents, test documents, reports, and task/trip reports
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose systems and equipment
  • Inspect completed work for conformance to specifications
  • Maintain effective communication with supervisors and managers
  • Remove, plan, execute, install, and modify electrical cables, cableways, conductors, connectors, strain relief, fasteners, and equipment aboard naval vessels
  • Disconnect, repair, install, and reconnect electrical and data conductors on existing and new equipment
  • Perform complicated and non-routine tasks, including duties outside the specialty, to complete assignments
  • Complete quality documents for reporting and work verification
  • Follow company and shipyard safety and quality procedures

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma, trade school, or equivalent
  • 4 years of related shipboard electrical experience
  • Must have a DoD Secret security clearance and maintain it throughout employment
  • Must obtain shipyard and base access credentials within 30 days of start date and maintain them
  • Must travel 50%–75% when not assigned to local tasking
  • Must provide hand tools and trade-specific PPE
  • Experience installing, removing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing high- and low-voltage electrical distribution systems, associated equipment, and cabling
  • Working knowledge of drawings, blueprints, wire connection sheets, run sheets, technical manuals, engineering sketches, charts, work orders, and instructions
  • Familiarity with planning and laying out cable runs, preparing areas for welding, and assisting with attachment
  • Experience installing, opening, modifying, and logging MCTs, MCPs, and stuffing tubes and completing final-inspection tests
  • Proficiency in electrically disconnecting and reconnecting equipment and completing supporting OQE
  • Experience fabricating multipin copper connectors and installing fiber-optic cable and single- and multimode fiber-optic connectors
  • Experience using multimeters, meggers, and testing procedures safely
  • Ability to communicate technical work aspects with Team Leads and co-workers
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Ability to lift, carry, and transport at least 30 lbs
  • Ability to work on and climb ladders, in extreme temperatures, aboard ships, in shipyards, industrial conditions, confined spaces, high heat, humidity, noise, and dirty conditions
  • May need to work aloft or over vessel sides, ride ships at sea for extended periods, and wear a respirator
  • Preferred: current NAVSEA Fiber Optic certification
  • Preferred: multipin connector fabrication certification per NAVSEA STD 009-73
  • Preferred: NAVSEA Cableway Improvement Program certifications
  • Preferred: vocational school or skilled trades certificate program completion
  • OSHA 10 Maritime Certification is a plus
