About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide direct patient care under the supervision and mentorship of a dedicated 1:1 Registered Nurse (RN) Preceptor
  • Complete approximately 200 to 300 clinical hours during the 10-week program
  • Develop nursing knowledge, clinical skills, critical thinking, and organizational competencies
  • Work with interdisciplinary healthcare teams, including nurses, providers, support staff, and other healthcare professionals
  • Apply the nursing process when delivering nursing care
  • Seek feedback from the Preceptor regarding assessment, care planning, implementation/coordination, and evaluation of patient care
  • Enhance communication with patients/clients, families, and multidisciplinary team members
  • Assist the Preceptor with selected procedures and treatments
  • Participate in educational activities supporting professional nursing practice
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and plan care appropriately with patients and families

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Senior nursing student enrolled in an accredited Registered Nurse (RN) program
  • Good academic standing within the nursing program
  • Ability to work assigned schedules and hours as determined by the department
  • Ability to work day, night, weekend, and 12-hour shifts
  • Externship should be the primary summer commitment
  • Resume including reliable contact information and expected graduation date
  • Unofficial transcript including Nursing GPA
  • Personal narrative of expectations for the Extern Program with a list of top 5 preferred units
  • Must indicate willingness to travel for an externship experience and/or preference for placement in Spearfish, Sturgis, Deadwood, or Custer Hospital
  • Ability to perform Very Heavy work and possible exposure to radiation, contaminated needles, and infectious body substances
