About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Own major projects in the dual execution stack for seamless local and cloud query processing
Build cloud infrastructure that dynamically assigns resources for workloads of varying size and memory requirements
Lead cross-functional work with frontend, platform, and infrastructure teams
Advance embedded database performance, distributed execution, and DuckDB internals
Develop DuckDB expertise and share it through mentorship and documentation
Collaborate with support to debug issues and prioritize improvements based on usage patterns
Identify architectural challenges and remove bottlenecks
Mentor teammates and improve engineering practices
Work with DuckDB Labs to align APIs and shape DuckDB’s future

Requirements

What you’ll need

Experience building and shipping complex backend systems
Fluency in a backend language such as C++, Rust, Java, or similar systems languages
Comfort working close to the metal
Foundation in query engines, execution plans, indexing, and performance optimization techniques
Hands-on experience with DuckDB is a plus
Experience with cloud infrastructure and networking
Experience building low-latency distributed systems
Ability to scope and lead projects spanning multiple collaborators and cross-functional dependencies
Clear thinking, careful design, and thoughtful tradeoffs
Comfortable mentoring peers
Interest in engaging with the wider open-source and DuckDB community
Currently eligible to work in Germany
Ability to work from the office three days per week
