About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Serve as the technical expert for environmental compliance under the Environmental Manager
- Develop strategic compliance plans and objectives focused on water permitting, monitoring, reporting, and recordkeeping
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local water quality standards and regulations
- Oversee and update environmental compliance programs for water management
- Maintain water data, water system performance records, and operational logs
- Prepare and submit Water Quality Monitoring Reports, Water Use Reports, and Site Water Reports
- Prepare, submit, and maintain water permits, including California Regional Water Board, County Water Permits, and SWPPP Reports
- Collect, analyze, and interpret data from remote monitoring wells, freshwater wells, mine wells, and other samples
- Support environmental assessments for new or modified processes and construction or expansion projects
- Assist operations and maintenance teams with efficient operation of pumps, wells, pipes, and other water systems
- Conduct internal water compliance audits and corrective-action follow-ups
- Develop and deliver water compliance training for employees, contractors, and supervisors
- Track regulatory changes and communicate potential impacts to management
- Support sustainability initiatives involving water balances, water recycling, and freshwater use
- Identify opportunities to reduce environmental impact and improve compliance performance
- Perform and document environmental, health, and safety audits
- Develop knowledge of CalOSHA, MSHA, and MP Materials health and safety practices
- Respond to chemical spill emergencies, including containment, cleanup, and hazardous-material disposal
- Keep facility personnel informed of environmental regulations and pending changes
- Translate environmental regulations, policies, and procedures into understandable operational terms
- Maintain knowledge of regulations applicable to air, water, and solid waste management
- Train site personnel to comply with and enforce environmental regulations and policies, emphasizing prevention and individual responsibility
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree in environmental or environmental-related discipline is preferred
- 4+ years’ experience in environmental or environmental-related fields
- Professional certifications such as CEP, QEP, and/or CES are a plus but not required
- CA State Water Boards D1 Operator certification is preferred, or ability to acquire certification within 6 months of hire
- Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills
- Ability to effectively train and direct peers, employees, contractors, and vendors
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment
- Knowledge of industrial plant processes, equipment, operations, and maintenance requirements
- Project management skills
- Employee relations skills and ability to motivate others
- Knowledge of regulatory and corrective action tracking programs
- Knowledge of computer maintenance management tracking programs
- Willingness to promote safety, participate in Process Hazard Analysis procedures and Pre-Startup Safety Reviews
- Must use required PPE, including potentially hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves, and other required equipment
- Must pass a full-face respiratory fit test
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Must be able to work in PPE level C
- Must be able to work in extreme weather and open-pit mine or manufacturing/chemical plant conditions
- Must be authorized to work in the United States and complete employment verification upon hire
