About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead the engineering team building NETGEAR’s cloud platform for configuration, monitoring, and control of AV-over-IP switching and devices
- Hire, develop, retain, coach, and provide performance feedback to Java backend engineers
- Plan team capacity, headcount, and growth
- Drive architecture for Java/Spring Boot microservices, REST and gRPC APIs, event-driven processing, and data pipelines
- Set technical direction and standards for code quality, testing, observability, and deployment
- Lead technical design reviews and make trade-offs across performance, scalability, security, and time-to-market
- Partner with architects on multi-region cloud architecture for AV device management
- Own roadmap planning, sprint execution, release management, and post-launch monitoring
- Collaborate with product management on prioritization, scope, and timelines
- Establish engineering metrics and drive continuous improvement
- Manage cross-team dependencies across firmware, mobile, web, QA, and IT
- Drive root-cause analysis and production incident prevention; participate in on-call leadership rotation
- Translate AV use cases into robust backend services
- Drive reliability, performance, and security improvements using telemetry and customer feedback
- Represent engineering in customer escalations, partner design reviews, and industry events when needed
- Enforce secure coding, threat modeling, OWASP Top 10 compliance, automated testing, code review, and CI/CD practices
- Lead data protection, authentication, authorization, high-availability, disaster recovery, and backup planning
- Define and refine agile operating models and ceremonies
- Champion SDLC automation for testing, deployment, infrastructure as code, and operations
- Communicate plans, status, risks, and trade-offs to senior leadership
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
- 10+ years of professional Java software development experience
- At least 3+ years directly managing engineering teams, including hiring, performance, and growth
- Proven track record of delivering large-scale, production cloud-based services in Java
- Expert knowledge of Java 8+, ideally Java 17/21, and the Spring/Spring Boot ecosystem
- Strong understanding of microservices architecture, REST/gRPC APIs, message brokers such as Kafka and RabbitMQ, and event-driven design
- Hands-on experience with relational and NoSQL databases, including PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Cassandra, and Redis
- Knowledge of JVM internals, performance tuning, profiling, and concurrency
- Strong experience designing and operating multi-tenant SaaS or cloud platforms on AWS, Azure, or GCP
- Hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes/EKS or equivalent
- Familiarity with CI/CD tools, infrastructure as code, and observability tooling
- Experience with unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end testing and code review practices
- Experience with secure-by-design practices, OAuth2/OIDC, OWASP Top 10, and data protection regulations
- Familiarity with high-availability patterns, SLO/SLI definition, and modern incident management
- Working knowledge of networking concepts including L2/L3, VLAN, and multicast
- Demonstrated people leadership, hiring, mentoring, performance management, and career development skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; Mandarin is a plus
- Ability to work effectively across geographically distributed teams
