About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Report to the Director of Collection Services as a member of the Collection Services Department
  • Edit existing catalog records and create original records, primarily for books and atlases, in a variety of languages
  • Search library databases and the Newberry catalog for bibliographic and authority records
  • Verify and edit catalog records using current cataloging and description resources
  • Apply local practices, consortium requirements, and national standards
  • Participate in collection management activities, including inventories, accessioning, physical inspection of new materials, and deaccessioning
  • Participate in department meetings as appropriate
  • Maintain departmental production and cataloging quality goals
  • Perform other tasks as needed to achieve departmental goals

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Experience navigating library catalogs/databases
  • Computer proficiency in Internet searching and the Microsoft Windows environment
  • Ability to work independently with close attention to detail, accuracy, and production expectations
  • Ability to follow instructions and learn new concepts and skills
  • Ability to organize time and work on multiple projects
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally
  • Preferred: Bachelor's degree and/or coursework in a Library Science program or humanities coursework
  • Preferred: Library technical services experience using OCLC Connexion and a cataloging module of an integrated library system, preferably Ex Libris Alma
  • Preferred: Experience applying RDA, AACR2, LC Classification, LC Subject Headings, and MARC21
  • Preferred: Knowledge of at least one Western European language
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship
