About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Own the design and performance calculations of the RF gridded ion thruster from concept to flight configuration
- Iterate thruster designs to support the NEO-1 satellite and customer thruster deliveries
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical and control engineers on ion propulsion system iterations
- Design and build test rigs and equipment for propulsion testing
- Assemble and operate test hardware, electronics and vacuum facilities
- Run electric propulsion tests on your own designs and analyse results
- Plan and run test campaigns
- Convert test results into design changes and re-test
- Document test configurations and results to provide traceable evidence for system verification and qualification
Requirements
What you’ll need- Strong knowledge of RF gridded ion thrusters, including RF plasma generation, ion optics and neutralisation
- Hands-on electric propulsion testing, ideally with RF generators, high-voltage power supplies and thrust balances
- Experience with vacuum systems, including pumps, gauges and valves
- Experience with power supplies, fluid management, high-pressure gas tanks, mass flow controllers and data acquisition
- Solid grounding in plasma physics, modelling, diagnostics and ionisation processes
- Willingness to design, build and test your own hardware
- Willingness to work extended hours on-site
- Experience taking a thruster from design through qualification to flight hardware is nice to have
- Scripting for data analysis and test automation using Python or MATLAB is nice to have
- Experience running thrusters on multiple propellants, such as xenon, krypton or air, is nice to have
