About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Operate and maintain water and/or wastewater treatment equipment in compliance with state and federal environmental limits
  • Monitor and sample well and groundwater entering the system; adjust treatment levels when variances are detected and sample water before it exits the system
  • Detect and report atypical conditions, damaged or malfunctioning meters, tampering, leaks, unusual consumption, exposed wiring, and other safety hazards
  • Repair equipment, shut down equipment for major maintenance, activate alternate equipment, and request outside vendors for major repairs and overhauls
  • Activate pumps, valves, and processing equipment to move water through treatment processes
  • Dispose of waste materials according to company procedures and government controls
  • Assist the Lead Operator with overflow or chemical/unpurified-water spill emergencies and follow safety protocols
  • Add chemicals according to predetermined formulas and advise the Lead Operator when inventory is low
  • Read and interpret meters and gauges, adjust controls, and retrieve computer treatment-process reports
  • Prepare reports and maintain logs for meter readings, tests, chemical and equipment usage, and other state/company recordkeeping
  • Backwash filters and basins; handle chlorine safely and maintain chlorine-related equipment
  • Clean and maintain treatment plants, pumping stations, wells, grounds, and buildings; prepare and paint equipment, walls, and floors
  • Ensure regulatory compliance, company policy adherence, and facility safety
  • Travel independently between worksites daily on company time
  • Participate in scheduled on-call rotations and respond to emergencies
  • Complete facility and vehicle inspections and follow up on findings
  • Install and read water meters
  • Liaise with customers and customer service and provide on-site customer communication
  • Improve operations, reduce turnaround times, streamline work processes, and provide seamless utility service
  • Keep facilities and grounds clean, orderly, and compliant with company standards

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 3–5 years of mechanical experience, including at least 3 years specializing in chemical treatment of water and/or wastewater, or a minimum of 3 years in the water/wastewater utility field with experience operating and maintaining groundwater-supplied water systems and associated distribution systems
  • High school diploma
  • Currently holds a second-level operator license per state regulation; may be in the process of obtaining a third-level license
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to frequently perform moderate to heavy physical demands, including lifting 75 lbs., walking 10+ miles daily, climbing, and mechanical repair
  • Ability to read meters, charts, and gauges and accurately maintain plant-operation records
  • Ability to read and comprehend written technical information and communicate clearly and effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data
  • Ability to perform mathematical equations to determine chemical doses for flow rates and proper treatment
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, coworkers, and regulatory agencies
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to operate, maneuver, and/or control equipment, machinery, tools, and materials used for essential functions
  • Familiarity with MS Word, Excel, laptops, tablets, and mobile devices; ability to learn internal software programs
  • Availability for after-hours and weekend on-call support
  • Some travel within the service area
  • Availability for shift work and weekend scheduling
