About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide legal advice and counsel to business partners on complex matters
  • Protect NiSource through enterprise-wide counsel across its six-state operating footprint
  • Advise on disputes, litigation, breach of contracts, claims, investigations, emergency incidents, subpoenas and other high-risk matters
  • Develop and execute case and trial strategy
  • Advise on complex litigation, claims and pre-litigation disputes
  • Direct outside counsel and experts
  • Resolve disputes, control costs, reduce future risk and strengthen business practices
  • Resolve legal issues and provide proactive, business-savvy legal advice
  • Anticipate internal and external business and regulatory issues
  • Retain, supervise and manage outside counsel on selected matters
  • Communicate status updates to business partners
  • Review and revise legal documents
  • Negotiate with outside parties on contractual issues and legal disputes
  • Train business partners on legal issues
  • Manage assigned litigation, significant claims, investigations, subpoenas and pre-litigation disputes from initial assessment through resolution
  • Develop case and resolution strategy and coordinate outside counsel, experts, discovery and matter budgets
  • Support emergency and post-incident response, including evidence preservation and transition to ongoing claim or litigation management

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school
  • 1-3 years' experience with handling matters independently
  • Able to handle case responsibilities with some supervision
  • Exemplary personal and professional integrity and business ethics
  • Strong pragmatic business acumen and ability to recognize business consequences of legal advice
  • Strong, logical legal mind and ability to apply abstract concepts of law to make timely, well-reasoned decisions
  • Ability to work efficiently under time pressures and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Sound judgment
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to engender trust, respect and confidence with business partners
  • Strong oral, written and presentation communication skills
  • Strong negotiating skills
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws, and interactions between state and federal laws and agencies
  • Problem solving skills
  • Adaptable to changing environments
  • Emergency coverage, overtime and some travel required
  • 2+ years of civil litigation experience preferred
  • Experience developing case and trial strategy and evaluating complex claims preferred
  • Experience with emergency or incident response and evidence preservation preferred
  • Ability to provide dedicated 24/7 legal support during assigned on-call rotations preferred
  • Experience managing outside counsel, experts and matter budgets preferred
  • Experience with environmental matters preferred
  • Experience in the utility industry or another regulated industry preferred
  • Experience at a law firm or publicly traded corporation preferred
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Must not require employer sponsorship now or in the future
