About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead contracted suppliers responsible for utility vegetation management and preventive maintenance
- Manage tree crews and utility work planners supporting transmission and distribution electrical operations
- Support electric line and gas maintenance tasks, construction projects, and asset improvements
- Manage concurrent projects ranging from $10k to $5M annually
- Develop, execute, and oversee annual vegetation management work plans
- Forecast and track budgets; monitor project progress, schedules, quality, and cost effectiveness
- Approve project extensions, expenditures, and invoicing
- Collaborate with project management, engineering, electric line operations, gas operations, and environmental stakeholders
- Manage contracted workforces and 24-hour on-call tree crews across the assigned service territory
- Onboard suppliers and evaluate projects for crewing, equipment, environmental compliance, permits, and planned outages
- Conduct site inspections and coach field crews on work techniques, safety, and industry best management practices
- Verify contractor documentation and qualifications; audit safety and contract compliance
- Facilitate compliance with NIPSCO safety manuals and policies
- Create and deliver training on departmental policies, programs, and safe work practices
- Investigate and resolve customer complaints, inquiries, and claims
- Meet municipal representatives and property owners regarding planned work
- Respond to emergencies using established procedures, incident command, and storm recovery structures
- Research, compile, and submit IURC, NERC, DOT, and other compliance documents and reports
- Formulate project specifications, bid documents, and contract language with Supply Chain and Procurement
Requirements
What you’ll need- High School Diploma or GED
- 4+ years expert knowledge of utility forestry processes and procedures within qualifying industry experience
- Documented history of progressive levels of responsibility
- Thorough knowledge of forestry best practices and procedures, arboriculture pruning practices, tree growth response, tree biology, and herbicide/pesticide applications
- Working knowledge of gas and electric transmission and distribution systems
- Working knowledge of FERC, NERC, and IURC guidelines and standards
- Working knowledge of OSHA and ANSI standard electric utility practices
- Ability to assess situations and make sound decisions, especially during emergencies
- Working knowledge of Microsoft applications, ESRI applications, databases, and documentation tools
- Knowledge of maps, prints, records, standards, and engineering drawings
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects under stringent deadlines and schedules
- Knowledge of wildfire risk and prevention strategies, hazardous tree removal and assessment
- Working knowledge of supplier management principles, RFPs, contract bid specifications, and budget tracking
- Valid driver’s license
- Pesticide Applicator state licensure within 180 days
- Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States and must not require employer sponsorship now or in the future
- Ability to work extended hours and support emergency response efforts when required
