About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Support all NOLS Teton Valley programs, staff, and students
- Split work between approximately 150 days of program supervision and 45 days of field work
- Directly mentor and train instructors in the field
- Coordinate with the Director and Assistant Director to ensure program quality and promote student, field staff, and in-town staff satisfaction
- Supervise course logistics and educational outcomes
- Collaborate with and support operations, risk management, and staff
- Supervise technical river and winter course offerings
- Plan quality briefings and debriefings and write performance evaluations
- Guide and develop field faculty
- Plan and lead winter terrain tours
- Coach and continually train instructors on winter risk management, avalanche hazard evaluation, and cold injuries
- Plan and lead river skills and rescue skills training
- Coach and continually train river instructors on risk management, whitewater skills, and rescue skills
- Collaborate to recruit, develop, and retain field faculty
- Hold the evacuation phone on a rotating basis
- Develop work plans incorporating mentorship opportunities, Teton Valley macro goals, and outreach opportunities
Requirements
What you’ll need- Experience leading courses in both river and winter classrooms for NOLS; course leading experience preferred in one or both disciplines
- Clean driving record with ability to become an approved driver for NOLS
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- High attention to detail
- Willingness to maintain a flexible schedule and work late/early, weekends, and holidays
- Effective supervisory skills
- Experience mentoring and developing faculty preferred
- Engagement with the NOLS mission, strategic plan, and field curriculum preferred
- Familiarity and positive performance with Teton Valley and other NOLS operations preferred
- Ability to nurture and support a community preferred
- Availability for the entirety of the summer and winter operating seasons preferred
- Availability to work winter and river field courses preferred
- Must submit one PDF containing both resume and cover letter
- Criminal background check required from all NOLS employees
