About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Supervise field faculty and ensure program quality for Teton Valley-based winter field courses
  • Provide curriculum, route, and risk management support to instructor teams
  • Facilitate conversations within instructor teams, provide feedback, evaluate performance, and mentor career development
  • Hold the evacuation phone on a rotating basis
  • Supervise all aspects of Teton Valley’s winter and avalanche course offerings
  • Plan quality briefings and debriefings and write performance evaluations
  • Plan and lead terrain tours for instructor teams
  • Coach and continually train instructors in winter risk management, avalanche hazard evaluation, and cold injuries
  • Coach and mentor winter program staff, supervise seminar staff, and assist in seminar development and delivery
  • Maintain relationships with outside industry professionals for winter program development and continuing education
  • Organize course-related paperwork, including pre- and post-course distribution and tracking
  • Collaborate with departments and programs/locations to enhance the NOLS Winter Program
  • Communicate with students before courses and support students while in town
  • Coordinate with admissions and alumni departments
  • Communicate with parents regarding travel, support, and evacuations
  • Promote field and in-town risk management and contribute to Accepted Field Practices and curriculum materials
  • Coordinate evacuations and care for evacuees while in town
  • Participate in planning the next winter’s program
  • Maintain safe, clean, and efficient facilities
  • Drive courses, support course logistics, and assist operations staff
  • Complete projects and responsibilities assigned by the assistant director or director

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Clean driving record and ability to become an approved driver for NOLS
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • High attention to detail
  • Willingness to maintain a flexible schedule, including late/early hours, weekends, and holidays
  • Effective supervisory skills
  • Ability to act as a fill-in field instructor by maintaining active instructor status
  • Field work in other seasons is expected
  • Priority given to NOLS winter course leaders with field experience at NOLS Teton Valley
  • Engagement with the NOLS mission, strategic plan, and field curriculum
  • Familiarity and positive performance with Teton Valley and other NOLS operations
  • Experience mentoring and developing faculty
  • Ability to nurture and support a community
  • Availability for the entirety of the winter operating season
  • Availability to work winter field courses or seminars as deemed appropriate or necessary
