About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Develop, implement, oversee, and continuously improve radiation protection programs
- Serve as designated Radiation Safety Officer for licensed radioactive material programs
- Maintain radiation protection policies, procedures, operating practices, authorizations, licenses, permits, and records
- Administer programs in accordance with NRC, Agreement State, DOE, DOT, EPA, OSHA, and client-specific requirements
- Lead internal audits, program assessments, and readiness reviews
- Provide technical guidance for radiological characterization, surveys, and assessments
- Support environmental remediation, decommissioning, radioactive waste management, and site investigation projects
- Perform dose assessments, shielding evaluations, exposure modeling, and risk analyses
- Review and approve radiological work plans, health and safety plans, and technical reports
- Evaluate radiological hazards and develop controls
- Lead Final Status Survey planning, implementation, and closeout
- Manage Final Status Survey teams and coordinate survey execution across facilities, structures, systems, and land areas
- Develop project schedules, budgets, staffing plans, and resource forecasts
- Develop and review Final Status Survey Plans and survey packages
- Direct survey unit classification and characterization activities
- Establish survey methodologies, instrumentation requirements, scan coverage, and sampling strategies using MARSSIM
- Determine sample sizes, decision error rates, statistical evaluation requirements, and compliance demonstration methods
- Oversee collection, validation, verification, and management of radiological survey data
- Review survey data packages for completeness and technical accuracy
- Direct statistical evaluations and evaluate compliance with DCGLs and release criteria
- Ensure defensible documentation and traceability of survey activities
- Interface with regulatory agencies during inspections, audits, and enforcement activities
- Prepare and submit regulatory reports and notifications
- Monitor regulatory developments and implement program changes
- Oversee occupational dose monitoring, personnel dosimetry, and applicable bioassay programs
- Investigate radiological incidents, unusual occurrences, and exposure events
- Develop and deliver radiation safety training
- Maintain qualification and training records
- Conduct radiological surveys, contamination assessments, and field inspections
- Oversee radiological remediation, waste packaging, transportation, and disposal
- Support emergency response activities involving radioactive materials
- Evaluate and approve radiological work permits and exposure controls
- Mentor junior health physicists, industrial hygienists, and environmental professionals
- Support business development, technical proposals, and client presentations
- Serve as technical lead or project manager on radiological projects
- Participate in professional organizations and maintain professional certifications
Requirements
What you’ll need- B.S. degree in Health Physics or related field
- Certification in Comprehensive Health Physics by the American Board of Health Physics (CHP)
- Qualification to serve as Radiation Safety Officer under applicable NRC or Agreement State requirements
- Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible experience in health physics, radiation protection, radiological engineering, and/or radiation safety
- At least 10 years of experience implementing and overseeing NRC, DOE, and/or DoD Radiation Protection programs in compliance with 10 CFR 835
- At least 10 years of experience with external and internal dosimetry programs
- At least 10 years of experience in radiological decommissioning, remediation and/or waste management programs
- At least 10 years of experience designing, implementing, and documenting Verification/Final Status Surveys for unrestricted release of buildings and land areas
- Experience using RESRAD and MicroShield computer code
- Experience implementing MARSSIM and statistically evaluating laboratory and field radiological analysis results
- Experience addressing agency comments and supporting approval of plans, procedures, applications, and technical submittals
- Experience with business development, interpreting RFP language, and writing proposals
- Knowledge of radiation physics and instrumentation
- Knowledge of internal and external dosimetry
- Knowledge of radiation protection principles and practices
- Knowledge of radioactive waste management and disposal
- Knowledge of radiological characterization and decontamination
- Knowledge of radioactive material transportation
- Knowledge of environmental monitoring and sampling
- Knowledge of ALARA program implementation

- Current 40 Hour HAZWOPER qualification or ability to obtain qualification
- Must pass pre-employment background check

- REAL ID ACT-compliant documentation required at time of hire
- Must have no record prohibiting access to Department of Energy sites
- Proof of citizenship required as a condition of employment
- May be required to obtain and hold a Secret or higher U.S. Government clearance
