Key responsibilities & impact
  • Convert diagnoses and procedures for emergency and outpatient cases into accurate and timely ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes
  • Understand the clinical content of health records
  • Use an EHR system and encoder to perform coding duties
  • Abstract demographic and physician data for internal and regulatory reporting
  • Use the hospital’s abstracting system
  • Follow American Hospital Association Coding Clinic, ICD, CMS, HCAI, and NorthBay Health coding rules, regulations, conventions, and guidelines
  • Meet trained performance metrics and monitored idle-time expectations
  • Participate in frequent webcam-based team engagement

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Requires one of: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) in good standing
  • Two or more years of experience coding ICD10/CPT in an HIM department in an acute care hospital preferred
  • Experience with electronic health records/encoder systems required
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, disease process, reimbursement methodologies (DRGs, HCCs, APCs), and current ICD10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding conventions, rules, and guidelines
  • Understanding of the clinical content of a health record
  • Knowledge of business use of computer hardware and software
  • Microsoft Office: Email, Word, Excel
  • Ability and desire to hit metrics upon training
  • Ability to learn software and troubleshoot equipment as needed
  • Private, distraction-free home work area required for HIPAA reasons
  • Frequent webcam use for team engagement
  • High-speed internet exceeding 125 Mbps download speed or willingness to upgrade upon an offer
  • Availability to work days, Monday through Friday, as assigned based on business need
