About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Support data-informed decision-making for NPR’s digital ecosystem
- Write, optimize, and streamline complex SQL queries across app, video, and web datasets
- Handle raw event data, including unnesting nested arrays and struct fields in BigQuery GA4 exports
- Develop and manage measurement plans for NPR-owned and operated platforms using Google Tag Manager
- Conduct quality control and validation of tracking tags across releases
- Maintain and optimize scheduled queries, data summaries, and automated reporting pipelines
- Partner with Product and Data Products teams to design, build, and maintain interactive Looker dashboards
- Establish self-service analytics frameworks for internal stakeholders
- Support product analytics for the NPR App, website, and video platforms
- Extract actionable user habit and audience retention insights
- Diagnose, investigate, and resolve data discrepancies, tracking errors, and schema issues
- Write technical guides, tagging specifications, and documentation for analytics standards
- Collaborate with product managers, editorial teams, and technical groups to translate business questions into measurement plans and data infrastructure updates
- Report to the Audience Insights Director, Digital Insights
Requirements
What you’ll need- 2+ years of hands-on SQL experience
- Proficiency writing complex SQL queries from scratch
- Experience with relational databases and enterprise data warehouses, such as BigQuery and Dataform
- Experience querying large-scale raw digital event datasets, including GA4 raw exports
- Skill in unnesting arrays and handling complex record structures
- 2+ years of app and digital analytics experience
- Direct experience with app and web event tracking using Firebase, GA4, or similar platforms
- Understanding of the full tracking lifecycle from tag firing to analysis
- 2+ years of experience creating measurement plans and testing/QCing tracking implementations via Google Tag Manager
- Experience building reports and dashboards in Looker or similar BI tools
- Advanced spreadsheet modeling capabilities using Google Sheets or Excel
- Ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical teams and translate stakeholder needs into structured data infrastructure plans
- Fluent in writing efficient SQL queries against high-volume, event-level and unaggregated data
- Technical competence in digital analytics architecture, Google Tag Manager deployment, Firebase event tracking, and data QA protocols
- Proficiency transforming SQL query outputs into Looker dashboards and clear spreadsheets
- Ability to bridge digital product managers, software engineers, and editorial teams
- Ability to identify root causes of data anomalies, write clear documentation, and improve data systems
- Must work from a location within the United States supported by NPR, or on-site at an NPR facility, or a combination of both
