About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Drive data-informed decision-making for the NPR App
- Own platform experimentation and advanced mobile product analytics
- Write, optimize, and quality-control complex SQL queries using BigQuery
- Transform raw event logs, access nested arrays, and perform cohort, pattern, and behavioral analyses across app and web platforms
- Lead the experimentation lifecycle using Optimizely or comparable tools
- Formulate hypotheses, design A/B testing frameworks, run experiments, and translate results into product recommendations
- Deliver trend reporting and deep-dive mobile app analytics to product managers, newsroom leaders, and station stakeholders
- Build self-service insight tools and train cross-functional partners to use data effectively
- Streamline scheduled queries, data summaries, and automated pipelines
- Diagnose tracking anomalies and optimize data tool design with Data Products
- Prioritize analytical requests based on business impact and departmental strategy
- Share research tools and insights across NPR and partner stations
- Establish guidelines, data dictionaries, and technical documentation for app, video, and web metrics
- Report to the Audience Insights Senior Manager, Product
Requirements
What you’ll need- 5+ years of advanced SQL experience, including complex queries, raw unaggregated event logs, and data warehousing environments such as BigQuery and Dataform
- Expertise fetching, transforming, and manipulating complex data structures, including raw data, audience cohorts, and behavioral pattern modeling
- 5+ years of mobile and web analytics experience with app and digital behavioral analytics datasets such as Google Firebase and GA4
- 2+ years of experimentation design experience, including A/B and multivariate testing with enterprise platforms such as Optimizely
- Expert proficiency with Looker, Tableau, Excel, and Google Sheets
- Experience converting complex SQL outputs into clear visual stories and advanced spreadsheet models
- Experience training partners on data tools, establishing self-service frameworks, and mentoring peers on SQL and data hygiene best practices
- Exceptional SQL skills for unnesting arrays, parsing JSON/struct fields, and building scalable datasets from raw event-level digital behavior
- Competency in A/B testing design, statistical significance testing, hypothesis formulation, and post-test behavioral analysis
- Required technical mentorship through SQL code reviews, documentation, and training
- Ability to independently navigate shifting priorities, evaluate business impact, and lead complex projects from inception to completion
- Experience within digital news media, public broadcasting, or media streaming platforms preferred
- Statistical modeling proficiency using R or Python preferred
- Cross-functional partnership experience preferred
